Twinit's view on the 2024 Gartner® Competitive Behaviors in the Smart Building Market Research

Blog

A Gartner research entitled ‘Competitive Behaviors in the Smart Building Market’ provides key insights into the changing landscape of the Smart Building Market domain and provides insight to product managers on how to stay ahead. According to the report, new levels of scrutiny and demand around many building practices are leading building and facility stakeholders to reexamine their operations and services, and make two important transitions: 1) From asset-centricity to human-centricity and an environmental orientation; 2) From a focus on siloed use cases to an integrated approach to smart building. The fragmented history of the smart buildings market means that many vendors only address a single use case or a niche set of use cases.

Xiang provides a key finding in the Gartner research:

“The growing demand for comprehensive tech stacks among smart building technology buyers requires a shift from niche vendor offerings to integrated solutions supported by ecosystem partnerships.”

Summarised in the figure below, the three distinct strategies adopted by incumbent and emerging players highlight the competitive behaviours and diversity of vendors servicing the Smart Building industry.

Having recently launched our open source community, digitaltwin-factory, we are happy to read that Xiang makes a recommendation to product managers of smart building players to:

“Participate in and contribute to open-source projects related to smart buildings to reduce development costs and position your company within a community of innovators, facilitating knowledge-sharing and collaborations.”

In summary, in our view, this research provides practical and important recommendations to both incumbent and emerging Smart Building Players, which will assist the industry to meet the evolving needs of the clients.
